Prism’s Construction Supervision for Methanol-Fueled Escort Tugs

How Prism delivers construction supervision of Two RAsalvor 4400-DFM Dual Fuel Methanol Escort Tugs at Sanmar Shipyards in Türkiye
.

Prism Marine is proud to provide construction supervision services for KOTUG Canada in the build of two RAsalvor 4400-DFM dual-fuel methanol escort tugs at Sanmar Shipyard in Türkiye. Designed by the renowned naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd., these cutting-edge vessels are being constructed for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP). Once completed, they will play a critical role in escorting tankers through the Salish Sea, from the Port of Vancouver to the open Pacific Ocean, showcasing innovation in sustainable marine technology.

Meeting the Challenge

KOTUG Canada needed a reliable partner to oversee the construction of these high bollard pull methanol-fueled tugs and ensure the project stayed on track. The complexity of these state-of-the-art vessels required a company with expertise in marine construction supervision and a strong track record of delivering results on time and to the highest standards. A team with local knowledge would be beneficial in navigating the specific challenges of working in Türkiye and coordinating across different time zones. That’s where Prism stepped in.

Our Approach: On-the-Ground Supervision

Two of Prism’s qualified industry associates hit the ground running in Türkiye to provide hands-on construction supervision for the project starting in 2024. Our project manager and construction supervisor bring extensive experience in the construction of tugboats and a strong understanding of marine engineering, electrical systems, telecommunications, and coatings. Their in-depth knowledge of local customs and working cultures has ensured smooth coordination with the shipyard.

Progress Reporting

To ensure that the construction of the tugs stays on schedule and within budget, Prism’s project management team provides both weekly and monthly progress reports. These reports give the client and other stakeholders a comprehensive view of the construction status, including:

  • Construction progress photos and detailed updates.
  • Compilation of text, drawings, and meeting minutes for full transparency.
  • Quality control checks to ensure the work is up to the required standards.
  • Proof of arrival for key equipment and materials on the construction site.
  • S curve analysis showing the overall progress of the project, highlighting any risks that may affect delivery timelines.
  • Risk analysis of the delivery schedule, helping to proactively manage any potential delays.
  • Detailed review of the overall project status, focusing on the key milestones and progress made.

Key Project Highlights

Dual Fuel Methanol Technology: These two tugs are scheduled to be the world’s first large, purpose-built, high bollard pull methanol-fueled tugs when they enter service in 2025. Their environmentally friendly design will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and underwater radiated noise, contributing to the sustainability goals of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project.

Collaboration with Sc’ianew First Nation: KOTUG Canada has partnered with the Sc’ianew First Nation from Beecher Bay, which is located along the shipping route. The tugs will be named SD AISEMAHT and SD QWII-AAN’C SARAH in honor of important community members, reflecting the deep connection between the project and the local First Nation.

Project Scope and Purpose: The tugs will be crucial in escort operations for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, ensuring the safe passage of tankers through the shipping lanes of the Salish Sea.
