Building BC’s Marine Workforce: Prism’s Connection with BCIT Graduates

Skilled marine professionals are essential to keeping the industry moving. We’re proud to hire BCIT graduates who bring strong training in navigation, seamanship, and marine safety.

At Prism, we believe in supporting local talent and fostering the next generation of marine professionals. One way we do this is by hiring graduates from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Over the years, BCIT alumni have joined our team as skilled water taxi operators, applying their training and expertise in real-world operations along BC’s coastlines.

BCIT: Preparing Graduates for Real-World Success

BCIT is widely recognized for its specialized marine programs that prepare students for the modern maritime industry. Their graduates bring a unique combination of hands-on training and theoretical knowledge that makes them invaluable in roles requiring skill, precision, and adaptability.

As Linda Feuerhelm, Enhanced Bridge Watch Rating Instructor at BCIT, shares:

BCIT provides Bridge Watch Rating graduates with a solid foundation in hands-on training and essential knowledge and proficiency related to the practice of seamanship, navigation, standards of safe working procedures, and the hazards associated with the marine environment necessary to work on commercial vessels. They are equipped with the problem-solving skills, industry knowledge, and adaptability needed to excel in real-world roles.

Hiring Locally: A Win for Everyone

By bringing BCIT graduates onto our team, we can support our community while gaining highly skilled and motivated team members. Many of our current water taxi captains are BCIT alumni, and they’ve demonstrated the strength of their education and training.

Their ability to navigate BC’s coastal waters and prioritize safety has been critical to our operations. This reflects the high standards set by BCIT’s programs and the readiness of their graduates to transition into the workforce.

Strengthening the Marine Industry Through Collaboration

We’re proud to recognize the value BCIT brings to the marine industry and appreciate the quality of their graduates. While not a formal partnership, our connection with BCIT reflects how industry and education can work together to strengthen BC’s maritime sector.

BCIT instructors have shared positive feedback about Prism as a reliable and professional employer for their students. One of the most rewarding parts of this connection is seeing BCIT graduates build their careers with us, contributing to vital marine projects and helping us deliver outstanding service to our clients.

Looking Ahead: Investing in Local Talent, Supporting Global Projects

By bringing on graduates trained in British Columbia, we’re creating job opportunities and helping to strengthen the marine industry in our region.

But our work doesn’t stop at home. While we’re proud to support BC’s marine workforce, Prism’s reach extends worldwide. From safely transporting workers to remote sites to providing expert construction supervision and crewing solutions, our team delivers wherever we’re needed.

We’re proud to celebrate the success of BCIT graduates and look forward to welcoming more skilled professionals as we continue supporting marine projects—both locally and across the globe.
